How Much Do Braces Cost in the UK?

A quick search returns figures anywhere from £1,500 to well over £6,000, with very little explanation of what actually drives that difference. This guide breaks it down clearly, so you know exactly what you’re comparing – and what to ask before you commit.
Why do braces costs vary so much?
Several factors genuinely affect the price of orthodontic treatment, and not all of them are immediately obvious.
Case complexity is the biggest variable. A mild crowding case treated over 12 months is a fundamentally different clinical undertaking to a complex bite correction involving both arches over two years. Most specialist practices – including Bright Orthodontics – use a banding or tiering system that reflects this honestly, so the price you’re quoted is based on what your case actually requires, not a fixed number applied to everyone.
Who’s treating you matters more than most patients realise. There’s an important distinction between a specialist orthodontist and a general dentist offering orthodontic treatment as an additional service. A specialist orthodontist has completed a postgraduate training programme – typically a Master’s degree or Doctorate in Orthodontics – on top of their dental degree, and holds a place on the GDC Specialist List. At Bright Orthodontics, all treatment is led by GDC-registered specialist orthodontists. That level of training and clinical focus makes a real difference to outcomes – and it is reflected in the price.
Treatment type is the other significant variable. Metal braces, ceramic braces, Invisalign clear aligners and Angel Aligners all have different cost structures – and the right choice depends as much on your clinical needs as your personal preference.
What do braces cost in the UK?
Here’s a straightforward breakdown based on real prices from our practice.
Metal braces
Metal braces are the most clinically versatile option – suitable for the full range of case complexities, including NHS-referred patients. At Bright Orthodontics, metal brace pricing starts at £2,950 for patients under 16 and £3,450 for standard adult cases, rising to £5,500 for the most complex cases. A £500 initial deposit applies across all levels, with the balance spread over monthly instalments.
If only a single arch requires treatment, £500 is deducted from the total.
Ceramic braces
Ceramic braces use tooth-coloured brackets for a more discreet fixed option, while offering the same clinical precision as metal. Prices at Bright Orthodontics start at £3,950, rising to £6,000 for complex cases – with the same £500 deposit structure.
Invisalign
Invisalign clear aligners are suitable for a wide range of cases, from mild alignment through to full complex treatment. Pricing at Bright Orthodontics ranges from £3,900 for shorter packages through to £5,800 for full treatment with auxiliary support. Junior and teen packages start from £4,000.
Angel Aligners
Angel Aligners are a clear aligner system particularly well suited to younger patients. Single arch packages start from £2,250, with dual arch options from £2,600 – making them one of the most accessible aligner options available at the practice.
What’s included in the price?
Not all quoted prices include the same things – and this is where it pays to read carefully. At Bright Orthodontics, the treatment fee includes:
- Full clinical assessment and diagnosis by a specialist orthodontist – including X-rays, 3D smile simulation and photographs
- A bespoke treatment plan with all options and costs set out clearly before you commit
- All scheduled and emergency appointments until braces or aligners are removed
- Fixed and removable retainers
- 12 months of aftercare following brace removal
There is no waiting list to start treatment.
Does the NHS cover the cost of braces?
For patients under 18, NHS orthodontic treatment is available – but eligibility isn’t automatic. It’s assessed using the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN), a clinical scoring system that determines whether a case meets the threshold for funded treatment. For adults, NHS orthodontic treatment is very rarely available. Private treatment is the route for the vast majority of adult patients.
How can I spread the cost?
Orthodontic treatment is a significant investment, and most patients want to understand their payment options before making a decision. At Bright Orthodontics there are three ways to manage the cost.
Advance payment – paying in full upfront saves £150–£250 depending on your treatment.
Monthly direct debit – an initial payment followed by fixed monthly instalments. The practice handles the setup and you receive a payment link directly. No lengthy admin, no chasing.
Low-interest finance – treatment costs can be spread over 24 to 60 months at a representative rate of 9.9% APR. A credit check is required and you’ll need to have been resident in the UK for at least two years. Terms and conditions apply.
